Grief & Loss Counseling
Loss changes you. Maybe the world expects you to be back to normal by now, but the ache is still there — in the quiet moments, the anniversaries, the ordinary days when something reminds you and it hits all over again.
There's no right way and no timeline for grief. This is a space to feel what you feel, be met with tenderness, and slowly find your footing again.
Grief doesn't follow a timeline
And it isn't only about death. Grief can follow many kinds of loss, and all of them are valid:
• The death of a loved one — recent or long ago, expected or sudden
• Divorce, breakups, or the end of an important relationship
• Estrangement or the loss of a relationship that's still technically there
• Miscarriage, infertility, or reproductive loss
• Loss of health, identity, a career, or the life you thought you'd have
• Ambiguous and disenfranchised grief — the losses others don't recognize or let you mourn
You might be carrying more than you've let anyone see
So many women, especially Black women, are expected to be the strong one even in mourning — to hold everyone else together while quietly falling apart. You may have never had space to actually grieve. Here, you don't have to perform strength. You get to be human.
How grief counseling helps
Grief counseling won't rush you or ask you to 'move on.' Instead, together you and your therapist will:
• Make room for your grief without judgment or a stopwatch
• Understand the waves — the guilt, anger, numbness, and longing — as normal
• Find ways to carry your loss while still living a meaningful life
• Honor and stay connected to what (or who) you've lost
• Gently rebuild routine, hope, and a sense of yourself again
Our approach
At Cultivate Your Essence, grief work is gentle, relational, and paced entirely by you. Depending on what you need, your therapist may draw from client-centered care, narrative therapy, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), mindfulness, and Internal Family Systems (IFS) — always with cultural understanding and zero pressure to grieve 'correctly.'
"Shouldn't I be over this by now?"
No. Grief isn't a problem to solve or a phase to finish — it's love with nowhere to go, and it deserves care. Whether your loss was last month or years ago, it's never too late (or too soon) to get support. We'll start with a free consultation and go at whatever pace feels right.
